Brazilian born Melodic Rocker Joey Summer is already a well known name within the genre since his tenure with the band Arena. But he also gathered notoriety through his collaborations with Swedes' Street Talk, his celebrated 2010 solo album 'Written On The Horizon' and more recently with his contributions to Frédéric Slama's AOR project.
But now it's time for another solo outing from mister Summer, namely the long awaited recently released offering "One Bite From Paradise".
Teaming up with Joey is long time friend and colleague Daniel Lamas on keyboards and new drummer Gerald Abdo. But there are a few more famous faces lending a helping hand on "One Bite From Paradise" including Frédéric Slama, Tommy Denander and Street Talk's Fredrik Bergh who all play on the album and contribute in the songwriting department.
The album opens with the atmospheric instrumental / spoken "OBFP (Overture)" followed by the title track that starts with powerful guitars but soon evolves into a modern AOR song with a powerful chorus.
Subtle vocals and a piano introduce "Running Through The Night", perhaps the most 80s orientated track of the whole album.
Frenchman Slama makes his first appearance as a composer on the excellent "No Margin For Error", a midtempo melodic rock tune with an eighties aura.
One of my favorites of the CD is up next: "Addicted To Your Love", a polished slow AOR tune where the keyboards are the main ingredient.
The ballad "From Miles Away" has the German Melodic Euro sound stamped all over it while on "Heaven To Earth" the presence of Fredrik Bergh in the songwriting is clear from the first note as this beautiful midtempo cut has a typical Scandi sound. The kind of track that wouldn't be out of place on a Street Talk album.
"That's What I Am Waiting For" is a sweet melodic rock song with a solid rhythm section and melodic keyboards and guitars.
The very modern feel of "Sailor On The Moon" took me by surpise as did the track's chorus that borders on the poppy side.
The quite excellent ballad"It's Only Your Love" appeared on the previous album and is given new life here thanks the more vivid guitar work and the improved vocal arrangements.
"The Prize Of Love" changes the mood of the album, taking the listener back to melodic rock territory traveled by the likes of Jaded Heart during the nineties.
For the final, Joey has reserved one of the best tracks. Written by Slama and performed almost entirely by Tommy Denander, "No One's Gonna Hurt Me Anymore" is a definite highlight. A blend of commercial AOR / Melodic Rock with a killer chorus and superb guitars. Awesome tune, my friends.
To sum it all up: Joey Summer has delivered another really good slice of classy Melodic Rock / AOR in the shape of "One Bite From Paradise".
As usual the songs are carefully crafted and arranged with an eye/ear for detail.
Most of the songs here are pure gold for AOR fans and the songwriting contributions of Slama and Fredrik Bergh have raised the bar even more.
Line up:
Joey Summer: all vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass
Daniel Lamas: keyboards, bass, backing vocals
Gerard Abdo: drums
