After their highly acclaimed debut “Different Tomorrow”, it´s now time for the second release from Dirty Passion. But before I give you the lowdown on "In Wonderland" let's take a closer look at the band's current line-up cause there have been some changes in the Malmö based quartet. In fact, half of the members are new and this has had its effect on the sound.
The new faces in the line-up are bass player Nasty, formerly with Gypsy Pistoleroes and Kriss Lohikoski Svensson, who not only handles lead vocal duties but also plays rhythm guitar. The addition of both has altered the sound in a big way with Kriss' voice suiting the typical guitar sound of Christopher Olsson so much better and making the end result richer and heavier. At the same time Nasty´s bass playing is more powerful and clever.
It´s always nice when a band takes that extra step forward that you believed they could. After listening and liking their debut, it was rather clear that the band had that little extra in them. So when their latest offering started to spin in my CD player the hopes were rather high. And it always makes me happy when those hopes are met or in this here case, are even surpassed. Take it from a very ecstatic scribbler, this is exactly what Dirty Passion does on “ In Wonderland “
The songs are so much better and take up a place in your memory right from the first listen It´s like the band were jamming and playing around, almost as if they were trying to get to know each other when they made this record. There's a living, vibrant spark that shines through the whole album which might just be the result of the new line-up. What ever the reason is, I just have to say "keep it up cause it´s working"!
Overall the album is a little bit harder, a little dirtier with a lot of influences from 70´s hard rock but still with that typical Dirty Passion sound. The first "single" “When Darkness Falls”, released in November 2011, is one of a few tracks that sound like the “old” Dirty Passion. The band themselves said it wasn´t meant for “When Darkness Falls” to be on the album and will make everyone see what I mean with the new sound when you compare it with the other tracks on the record.
“Daughter of The Reaper” is a straight up hard rock anthem and I strongly believe that this song will make things happen for Dirty Passion. I found myself humming and singing it after the first time I heard it and with each spin it keeps getting better and better.
And there are more songs just like this, take for example “Dead End”, “Into The Wild”, “Sinner” and “Shadowland”. Well, I could go on and on cause what we have here is a genuine musical knockout!
It´s not just straight up hard rock anthems however. There are a couple of tracks that have a little 80's feeling to them, like “Lovers Lane” and “Light Of The Candle” and then there are the three ballads: the aforementioned “When Darkness Falls”, “Make It Last” and “Stay With Me”. They are all high quality songs and I rate all of them in the same way.
All of the songs on offer will stand the test of time in my humble opinion cause I´ve listened to them over and over again and I'm still drawn back to give that play button another push.
This is one of the best releases of 2012 !
