One should always respect the efforts of labels like Frontiers for fighting the battle for AOR and melodic rock. Not only are the good people at Frontiers working with a fraction of the budgets that were around in the heydays of said genre, the protagonists have also grown considerably older and new talent is hard to come by.
A band like Pride Of Lions however makes things a fair deal easier for the label since most (if not all) of the recordings are done at Jim Peteriks’ (formerly guitarist/keyboardist of Survivor) studio so the record company can start the business of selling with an already finished product. That said, I’ve never been a big supporter of Pride Of Lions. Not that I don’t like the fact that the band is giving everything they’ve got to fly the flag of melodic rock/AOR because I do. It’s just that it can be heard production-wise that the budgets of the 80’s are not available anymore. That being said, I still hold Mr. Peterik in very high esteem since many of Survivor's finest moments were written by him AND Frankie Sullivan and he still has that knack for writing a great tune today.
More so … on every Pride Of Lions album there are some genuine instant classics to be found and on this here “Immortal” the rocker ‘Vital Signs’ and the glorious ballad ‘Are You The Same Girl’ fall in that very category. The remainder of Pride Of Lions’ latest will surely cater to the long-standing fans of the band but new ones souls will sadly (again) not be won.
