There are some in the musical landscape that need no introduction. Most of the time it’s because said musicians wrote one or a couple of classic hits. Or because they wrote one or more soundtracks that stuck long after the movie was finished. Or because they formed one or two worldwide famous bands. It could be that the musician (or musicians) in question mixed and produced a couple of classic albums for other artists. But what if it was all of the above? Well, then your name must be Jeff Lynne.
But although Jeff Lynne is already a recording artist – Electric Light Orchestra, The Traveling Wilburys & numerous productions with the worlds greatest – since the 60’s this ‘Long Wave’ is only his 2nd solo album. The first one was the slightly brilliant ‘Armchair Theatre’ (1990). And as it goes with people that are getting older there’s a tendency of looking back to more youthful years. Jeff Lynne is translating this tendency with a covers-album. Lynne on the album: “I call this new album ‘Long Wave’ because all of the songs I sing on it are the ones heard on long wave radio when I was a kid growing up in Birmingham, England.” So what the record offers are Lynne-renditions of songs of Charles Aznavour, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and so on.
If this album’s a worthy addition to the no less than amazing portfolio of this artist I leave to the listener. For me it was a nice revelation of where Jeff Lynne got his pop-sensibilities that made him the artist that everybody knows and loves. Nothing more but certainly nothing less either.
