When a band re-records songs from their past there’s usually a problem. The problem could be that the band in question doesn’t own the rights to their own songs, so re-recording them earns them at least a little revenue. Or it’s been done to grant some income to new band members, or take it away from estranged ones. Whatever the case with Electric Light Orchestra, I’m pretty sure that the rights of the more famous songs of ELO are in Lynne’s possession or none at all as the band has always been more or less Jeff Lynne’s baby. He’s the sole remaining member up to this day and all songs on this album are written, produced and performed by Jeff Lynne.
That’s an accomplishment in its own right, by the way, the track-list of this album reads like 70 million sold records. Or something in that vicinity. And it has to be said: the songs sound almost exactly the same so it adds absolutely nothing to the impressive career of band & man but it doesn’t deduct anything as well. It suits just fine as introduction to this great band if there was any need to. “Mr. Blue Sky” is besides a superb song, an excellent collection of pop/rock songs and a legacy to one of Britain’s finest.
Jeff Lynne: vocals, guitars, piano, bass, drums, keyboards, vocoder, cowbell
