It´s always a risky business to review your teenage heroes´s new bands. This time it´s ex-Wrathchild singer Rocky Shades that releases his new band Wildside RIOT´s debut album. The question is, can they live up to the hopes and anticipation that I have for Rocky? After all he is “The Godfather of Glam Metal”.
But when the last song of the album fades out I´m more then happy with what I have heard. This is a record with a great mixture of up-tempo and mid-tempo tracks. The song quality is very high and so is the standard of the musicians and production. And Rocky´s voice still got the strength and characteristic sound that we recognize. The sound is very rich and full of nuances.
The album starts of with a real mental kick in the face with “All Hail The Wasted”, “Wildside Riot” and “Broken Toys”. Then it slows down slightly in the cocky “Fukk ´em”. The multitude of the album is rather noticeable in songs like “Babe I Gotta Go”, that sounds like it´s been taken straight from the 80´s Hairmetal anthems. The funky and laid back “Angel On My Back” and the ballad “My Paradise”.
Over all this is an extremely great album. It is well played and thoroughly worked though. Also very well produced without it going overboard.
Rocky Shades has managed to find the right musicians and written the right songs to be able to release an album that I believe will be one of the greatest of 2013. I know it´s only January but I can´t see that this record won´t be considered as one of the best at the end of the year.
So all I can say is GO get your copy, course Rocky Shades is BACK !!!
I know I will, as it won´t cut it for me to just have a digital copy.
Out Jan 28 on Livewire/Cargo Records
