Italy spawns quality in music, and Skull Daze is one of the bands to keep this promise.
Their home country has already proven to be an underground music breeding nest that's waiting to burst open onto the world, and it was with great expectations I popped this disc in the stereo.
My first impression was that Skulle Daze keep a steady middle ground between classic (heavy) metal and sleaze rock. There's a whole lot of technique in their songs (check out "Believe" to hear what I mean) that you usually don't hear in the sleazier genres.
Singer Johnny Rainbow brings the sleazy part to the band, although he's capable of much more than that. Melody, power, endurance and a sense of nostalgia are what I think of when I hear his vocals.
Skull Daze holds a steady, medium-tempo pace, and does so with style. Without pushing any speed limits, they get a groove going that drags you from verse to pumping chorus. "Beware" is a great example of how this is done practically.
If you like it screaming and blazing, but not too in-your-face, if you like to explore songs that take a little more time than one listen, go for Skull Daze and you'll like what you hear: riff-driven melodies that keep hitting you square in the chest.
