Twisted Sister live @ Sweden Rock Festival 10-06-2016
So the Twisted Sister Farewell Tour hit Sweden Rock Festival on
Friday night as the headliner of the day.
Before I will start this review I want to make some things clear.
The bound between the band and Sweden has always been very
special. At the release of “Stay Hungry” the Swedes took Twisted
Sister to their hearts in a very big way. And that love stayed very
strong thou out the years , even after the band spit up, so very
naturally the first reunion gig in 03 took place at Sweden Rock
Festival. And in these 13 years passing since then the band has
played in Sweden rather frequently. Actually so much that I have
seen them live three times prior to this show. Many people tend to
write Twisted Sister off as some kind o comedian band, probably
much due to their hit videos “We´re not gonna take it” and “I
wanna Rock” in the 80´s.
But if you actually would go see them live you would very soon
find out that they are an excellent live act. They always deliver a
high quality performance.
And now Twisted Sister has started their Farewell Tour, and to quot
Mr Dee Snider - “This is a real Farewell tour, it on´t go on and on
or be followed by another and then another”.
So this was the last show the band played on Swedish soil, ever.
And even if it was obvious that they felt a little bit sentimental
about it,it was very clear from the start that they wanted to give
Sweden Rock the best show they possible could. And that´s what
they did. As I said before I have seen Twisted Sister three times
prior and they always deliver high quality shows that impress you
. But it felt like the band found a new gear this night and took the
show to another level and gave us a truly amazing show. The
energy they had when they played this night was so high that you
almost could feel it sparkling in the air. Dee Snider is an absolutely
awesome frontman that capture the audience in a way that very few
singers can these days. The man has a great sense of humor and
makes fun of himself, the band and the fans with a great love and
respect for each and everyone of them. He know only to well that
they all are the reason to why he is standing where he is. And he
gives back with such great energy and love. I truly believe that
the man drains himself totally of all his power while on stage.
He runs, jumps and throws himself around the stage in a way that
makes you exhausted just by watching him. The rest of the band
surely gives it all they got, but they just do´t have his energy.
The show opens as it always does with “What you don´t know
(sure can´t hurt you)"and then just rolls n into a journey thou out
the years of Twisted Sister. We get all the hits, all the classics and
also we get some gems that haven´t been played live in a very long
time. One of these gems were that they gave us a version of
Rolling Stones “It´s only rock´n´roll(but I like it). This was the
number they always closed the shows with back in the club days.
Other rare live performances were “Destroyer” and “Tear it loose”.
And of course the band made a tribute to their lost band brother
AJ Pero with the song “Fire still burns”. AJ´s spot on this tour is
filled by Mike Portnoy, who actually was hand picked by AJ
himself. He once said to the band “- If anything ever happens to
me Mike is the man to fill in for me”
Now he probably never thought he would die, but sometimes life
takes dramatic turns. So the band asked Mike when they decided
to do this Farewell Tour, and he accepted. Mike does an excellent
Twisted Sister made all they could to make this show a grand
farewell and in my opinion they could´t be any better. This was a
class act show and a worthy goodbye from one of the great bands
from the 80´s.
Farewell Twisted Sister, your music will live in our hearts !
