Acey Slade (Ex-Murderdolls, Trashlight Vision, Dope) 'Rockstars and Tattoos' Interview
Hey Acey how are you?
Awesome! It’s fall, so Halloween is right around the corner and it’s the perfect time for us to start recording Dark Party album #2.
Tell us a bit about your first tattoo
It’s my family crest on my right shoulder. I got it right after I turned 18 from a biker named ‘Piglet’ as payment for playing a biker rally. This was a LONG time ago and the art of tattoo was not what it is today, and to be fair, he did an awesome job! There is a lot of small details to it and it’s held up very well!
And what about your latest?
The left arm sleeve we’ve been working on. It’s a Voodoo themed tribute to New Orleans. That’s being worked on by Wendi Koontz at Rising Dragon in NYC.
Some people say that you should never get your partners name tattooed. What are your thoughts on that?
Obviously, if I care enough about Voodoo to have it tattooed on me, I’m a bit superstitious. Yea, wanna divorce? Just get a tattoo of your significant other and the universe will do the rest.
Have you got any tattoo regrets?
I don’t really believe in regrets, but I will say this..learning that you shouldn’t get free tattoos on the back of the tour bus is a life lesson I could lived without learning the hard way.
Do you prefer tattooed women or have no preference?
No I don’t prefer one or the other. There are a lot of pretty women out there with amazing tattoos who only have that going for them. At the end of the day, we all get old, our tattoos look faded and we are left with who we are inside. Our souls never fade.
Where do you get inspiration for your tattoo designs?
I like more animated stuff, but also stuff that has a personal meaning to me. So for example, I started to get 1 bat tattooed on me for each year I’ve been sober…bats are good luck in some cultures, and every year I’m sober is a lucky one for me..and the public at large really..ha,ha..
Obviously it's important to think about a tattoo idea before actually getting it, how long do you usually 'think before you ink?'
Seems like I’m always thinking. About what? I have no idea. But I would say that before going to get ink I am thinking about what I’m going to get..till I see something shiny…then..I’m thinking about..what did you ask me?
How do you feel when you see a fan with a tattoo dedicated to you or a band you've been in?
Honored, obviously. I’ve always had a hand in the art work of a lot of the bands I’ve been in, so I see it not only as a homage to my bands, but also nice seeing your art work come to life.
Have you seen any particularly interesting fan tattoos?
I’ve seen some portrait tattoos of me…portraits have always been odd to me. Not in a bad way..it’s just weird to look at someones skin and see a face where a bicep or elbow should be, ya know? Ha,ha..but there is one in particular that is supper well done!
What is the worst tattoo you've ever seen?
I don’t like to judge people or art so I don’t pay much attention to bad tattoos.
Have you got any particular tattooists you want to mention?
Yes! Jay Borg did a lot of my work. Wendi Koontz at Rising Dragon in NYC has done most of my left sleave and Albi at Peter Tatto-2 in Long Island did my hands..
What do you think of tattoos that are located in areas of the body that most people wouldn't normally see...if you know what I mean...
what ever could you mean? Like the arm pit? They stink, ha,ha..Nahhh..not a fan. I see that and I think of some other guy being where I am at that time and it’s not a pleasant thought at them moment that I might be there..ha,ha..
Have you got any ideas for future tattoos or feel that you've got enough at the moment?
I know these 2 things. Each time I start a new tattoo I think, ‘Man, I am way too old for this shit, what the fuck are you doing?!?!’. Then about a week after, I think..’Ya know what would be awesome?’ and come up with a new idea. It’s like great sex with a person you don’t like. You always say, ‘I’m done! I’ve had it!’ but..always go back for more. I would say it’s a safe bet that I’ll be getting my chest done in the not too distant future.
Do you think the word 'tattoo' is starting to sound weird?! I do!
How do you think the guy from Fantasy Island feels?
Thanks for your time Acey! To conclude this interview, I'll give you a random fact about tattoos: An Ohio cheeseburger restaurant offers 25% discount for people with cheeseburger tattoo. There is a tattoo studio nearby that offers 25% off cheeseburger tattoos! How very suspicious...Maybe you need to see if getting nutella tattooed on you entitles you to free supplies!
